INTERNAL
MEDICINE
We
routinely manage a wide variety of illnesses common to pets
and people. Diabetic pets receive
the same insulin as we do. Routine blood sugar tests help
us chart the effectiveness of our treatment. Hypertension
has been found more and more commonly in our cat patients
secondary to other illnesses. X-rays are used to monitor heart
size in small breed pets with an audible heart murmur thus
controlling heart disease before
congestive heart disease occurs.
Liver
disease is
a common finding in both adult and older patients. We use
an ultrasound to visualize the five liver lobes, gall bladder,
and rest of the abdomen to assess the extent and severity
of the illness. Ultrasound guided biopsy allows us to obtain
the essential diagnosis to direct our therapy. Tumors
of the spleen and urinary tract are now diagnosed early
in their development, many times before they spread. Therefore,
surgery can be performed in a more healthy pet.
How can we do this?
Well
one of the reasons is you! As an educated pet owner you are
bringing us your pet very early in the disease process. We
utilize a complete physical examination, blood profiling,
x-rays, or ultrasound to diagnose many diseases. We formulate
treatment plans and have handouts on most of the common illnesses
to educate you on your pets expected response and of the potential
signs to watch for that would indicate a relapse.
Secondly,
River Heights Veterinary Clinic is a full service hospital
with an in-house laboratory, centrally located Intensive Care
Unit, separate dental suite, surgical suite advanced diagnostic
equipment (ultrasound, dental x-ray, blood pressure monitor,
endoscope). Diagnostically we are supported by Iddex Laboratories
which is a nation- wide network of specialists, providing
accurate and timely test results to samples we submit twice
daily. Moreover, we are staffed by a compassionate team of
experienced pet health care individuals dedicated to the best
care available to your pet.
Our
pharmacy is stocked with 95% of the medications or supplements
you need for your pet. They are available in sizes designed
for our patients small (two pound kitten) to larger dog breeds.
We do utilize human pharmacies like Osco for special or infrequently
used medications.
Our
goal is to offer the diagnostic services necessary to identify
your pets illness and institute early or advanced treatments
to resolve the condition. This may require hospitalization,
re-examinations/tests, or long term medication. A priority
of ours is to educate you on the condition and to direct you
on signs to watch for indicating relapse or anticipated recovery.
In any case we are here to provide what is best for your pet
just as we would for our own.
