ENDOSCOPY
An
endoscope is an instrument that allows direct visualization
with a body cavity, such as the gastrointestinal tract, and
upper respiratory tract. Fiber optics allow a light source
to be an external unit with a very high intensity light. A
fiber optic cable is attached which brings this intense light
within the scope and to its tip without any heat. This allows
safe, direct visualization of tissues within the body in a
color corrected view (just like daylight) making a diagnosis
possible.
A
biopsy channel allows instruments to be passed through the
scope to collect biopsies, grasp objects, or culture/aspirate
fluids. Furthermore, air and water are commonly used to both
dilate the organ (stomach) or clean the lens of debris (feces).
Most
of the studies performed at River Heights Veterinary Clinic
are of the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract due to the
size of our endoscope. In many cases, a diagnosis is made
non invasively by visualization and/or biopsies. The biopsies
are small pieces or tissue taken from the abnormal tissue
noted on examination. The tip of the endo scope is flexible
and allows the biopsy forceps to be directed with pinpoint
accuracy.

In
other cases the endoscope serves as a diagnostic aid (like
X-rays with a broken leg). A foreign object (plastic toy,
ect.) or material (towel or string) can be confirmed and a
surgical procedure is performed to correct the illness.
Patients
recover from the anesthesia readily (if not requiring surgery),
and many return home the same day.
