Interesting Cases
Fractured
Jaw

Gigi came to the
hospital with a fractured jaw. Due to its location and direction
of the fracture our treatment options were limited. We decided
to use a muzzle to limit jaw movement. A gruel type diet was
offered and she readily accepted the muzzle.

At 6 weeks post
fracture the jaw was not healed. GiGi was anesthetized for a
teeth cleaning and x-ray evaluation. X-rays showed minimal healing
and tooth root infection. Furthermore, the large molar (tooth)
had developed an infection at the apex of the root not in the
fracture site.

Upon consultation
with a board certified veterinary dentist we elected to extract
the diseased molar so that it would not interfere with the healing
process. Special care was taken not to create a second fracture
to GiGi's weakened jaw.

In order to promote
healing the extraction sites were curetted, flushed and gums
sutured. Moreover, a bone marrow aspirate was collected and
placed in the fracture site to provide cells to promote more
rapid bone healing. One month later this x-ray showed adequate
healing and the muzzle was removed.
